METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use high pressure because that could harm the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than necessary to clean commercial concrete surfaces. These surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal service.
